Constrained Generosity

Two things I learned about in Seth Godin’s altMBA. Constraints. And generosity.

I never really saw a connection between the two.

Maybe constrained generosity is something we see in Toastmasters. When you’re giving a verbal evaluation of someone’s speech and you struggle with pointing out ways they could make it stronger next time. All you can do is find existing strengths to highlight.

Maybe this struggle is out of fear that your feedback will offend rather than be helpful.

altMBA taught us to imagine removing certain constraints or boundaries and consider what might happen then.

If the constraint here is feeling the need to be inoffensive, what if we replaced it with the need to provoke instead?
